Muzzloader Season Nov. 9th 2009
13pts 18 1/2" inside spread.
I have watched this buck for 3 years now, and the only reason I took him this season is due to his genetic flaw that caused him to have a lop-sided rack.  As you can tell from the picture above, one side is formed much more nicely than the other side.  I have scouting camera pictures of him from last year with the same thing.  I watched this bruiser all through bow-season, sighting him dozens of times and drawing on him once, only to have the smart old buck stay just out of range. Well when muzzleloader season kicked in, I knew he'd make the mistake of coming too close.
I was sitting in my favorite stand and had already seen eight or nine doe's come through, and about a half dozen smaller bucks, but that was early and as the morning wore on, I was almost sure I'd seen all I was going to see.  Around 9:30 I noticed movement on the edge of the field I looked over from a finger of timber seperating the river and the field.  Four bucks casually popped out of the thicket, crossed the field, and made their way directly towards me.  The bucks stopped to rub trees, freshen scrapes, as well as forage for the scarce acorns.  Two of the younger bucks crossed within 10 yards of the stand and continued up the hill behind me.  As the lop-sided buck and another nice young 8 pointer hesitated before finally crossing about 40 yards away.  I whistled softly as I found the big buck in the scope, causing him to stop abruptly and stomp. The crosshairs settled on his front shoulder as I squeezed off the shot.  The smoke filled the area around the treestand, as I watched the buck bolt up the hill.  The second buck resumed feeding until the big buck who had stopped at the top of the hill started to wobble before hitting the ground.  I waited an extra thirty minutes in the stand as I texted a couple buddies and my father Pops, before getting down and sprinting to the buck.  He was my first buck in over 5 years, since implementing the QDMA restrictions on the property.  Lucky for me the shot hit him right in the heart, but low, seems I forgot to dial the scope back down in all the excitement and still had it on 9X power...LOL Guess I'd rather be lucky than good. I didn't mount this buck, which suprised some people, but I knew/know I'd have bigger bucks. Instead I decided to do a European Skull Mount with this buck as well as a nice 8pt I shot in Muzzleloader but didn't recover until General Firearms Season a week later. Boy am I glad I waited...the last week of Shotgun Season in a drive that ultimately resulted in one of my best gyps of ALL time being hit and killed, I was able to get in front of the chase, with 6 bucks and 8 does running in a group across a large open cow pasture and kill this MONSTER SIX POINTER...
Only 6 points, but 21" inside spread and heavy mass
